drake mag VOlume 64, issue 1 – Art direction and design
Project Brief
As the Art Director for this year’s magazine, I had the opportunity to work on two visually distinct yet conceptually aligned pieces: the cover design and a fashion story centered around skate culture. The overarching theme of the issue was controlled chaos, which I interpreted and applied in different ways across each project.
My Process
To represent controlled chaos on the cover, I used a mix of scribbles, hand-drawn illustrations, and layered typography. The result was a cover full of energy — unpredictable yet intentional — setting the tone for what readers could expect inside.
For the fashion spread, I wanted the photography to speak for itself. I used minimal copy and let the visuals take over. I developed a vision for the shoot in collaboration with the Photo Director, while incorporating hand-drawn elements and a custom, handmade typeface to echo the spirit of skate culture.
Along with the cover and the fashion feature, I designed several other editorial spreads and oversaw the magazine in its entirety — from initial concept to final print. Check it out by clicking the link below!
